Life Among the Nettles

The Small Tortoiseshell is Denmark's national butterfly and can be found wherever stinging nettles grow. Watch the nettles carefully: females lay their eggs on the underside of the upper leaves. When the caterpillars hatch, they spend their entire larval life together inside a large communal silken web spun around the top of the nettle plant.
